To hear the different sounds of a snaredrum in relationship to especially your music, you can start another application (for example WinAmp) that plays the music of your band, during you test different sounds with HowToTuneASnare - Lession 1 ... so you can get a more real impression of what kind of snaredrum-sound is good for your music. To hear exactly what influence a higher or deeper tension has, just put on headphones and listen to the higher undertones that differs if you change the bottom-head-tension.

HowToTuneASnare - Lession 1 is a good way to get experience in tuning snaredrums, because you don´t need to spend hours and hours to tune a real drum, the software does it for you. In a matrix you can play each combination of top-head-tension and bottom-head-tension. The sound was recorded with a very natural/real sounding microphone in compact-disk-quality.

 

There is another lession, also with a matrix of sound examples, that demonstrates the effect of a radialwavebreaker (a special inside muffler for snaredrums).
