01-06.09.08 Tour of Thailand

Thailand was certainly the best tour this year, which was maybe due to the fact, that my girlfriend came along. Already on the first stage the team showed, that we were serious with a fourth place by David and 10th by me. The second day was a chaotic stage, but we had benefitted greatly and took control of the tour. After six riders pulled away, another strong group of four with Stefan and Alex attacked and eventually joined the leading six. While they went on to cross the line first and third respectively, nobody wanted or could chase them down, instead some teams only tried to attack. I benefitted from this by getting into a group of six. We closed down the lead very fast, caught most of the breakaway in the last kilometer and I still sprinted to fourth and third overall, while Coutsie took the yellow jersey.

The following stages were quite tactical. We obviously wanted to keep yellow, but at the same time Stefan aimed for another Stage win, I wanted second and after the third day we were down to three riders. Still we managed almost all of our goals, Alex won, I moved up to second and another second place for Stefan on Stage six. Additionally I won the intermediate point competition and we had a couple more finishes in the top ten.

After the Tour, which finished in Lampang, the whole team did another 90km ride to Chiang Mai, where our team manager, Wizud, lives. He also did it on his bike, but was always close to our support car and his arm is probably still sore ;-) The following days we did buggy and scooter driving, elephant riding and enjoying one of the best cuisines worldwide, although a Gemsbocksteak is still unbeaten! Melli and I spent another three exiting days in crazy Bangkok and arrived safely back home on the 15 of September.
