Our observing site

This is a view from the 21st floor of our hotal on eclipse morning...

As predicted, these clouds moved away. Until noon the day convection built up, making annoying cumulus clouds popping up. We could see from our vantage point that the tendency of cloud formation was much stronger over the city compared to the surrounding countryside. We decided to visit Rainer Kresken at Kochenevo. With the exception of the fact that our taxi driver was held by the police for half an hour, the trip was smooth. This   KMZ-file for  Google Earth indicates our site.

This group of young astronomers from Moscow came by transsibirian railway to observe the eclipse. Their enthusiasm remembered me strongly of my own trip to Siberia for the eclipse of July 1981. Gerd  used a 75mm Pentax refractor on a Vixen NP mount and controlled the camera by his notebook computer.

David Morgan, Steffen Elste and Rainer Kresken making final preparations before 1st contact. My setup: 500mm f/6.3-telefoto lens on an old clock-driven department store mount. As Gerd I used a modded Canon 350D controlled by a notebook computer. The vegetation at the shore of the lake was very conveniently shielding off the quite strong wind.  Foto: Gerd Neumann.
