The genus Apareiodon is diagnosed by several features of jaws. The species A. gransabana is described from the Rio Caroni system in the Gran Sabana region of eastern Venezuela. It differs from all congeners by possessing two ventrolateral rows of dark spots. Apareiodon gransabana is further distinguished by a mean predorsal distance exceeding 0.5 of SL vs less than 0.5 of SL in other species of the genus. Apareiodon gransabana is found in small streams mostly in rocky areas with moderate to strong current. This species is named for the Gran Sabana physiographic province of Venezuela to which it is probably endemic. The Gran Sabana region of southeastern Venezuela (approximately 96,000 km²) is a topographical complex portion of the Guayana Shield. The region is characterized by the famous table mountains (called Tepuis). |
